Your local council has a broad range of responsibilities and priorities that are shaped by what our residents and businesses tell us they need and want.

Cheltenham Borough Council is responsible for the management of our award-winning green spaces and we work closely with residents’ associations and ‘Friends of’ groups to improve and enhance our parks, making sure that the facilities that make them special are taken care of. Last year, seven of our parks and green spaces were presented with the prestigious Green Flag Award, which confirms their status as some of the best in the United Kingdom.

We also aim to continue to improve our kerbside recycling rates and services. Residents can now recycle a huge variety of materials at the kerbside, such as paper, tin, glass, plastics, cardboard, batteries, small electricals and textiles, with a trial in some areas of soft plastics.

Making life easier for residents

‘Bring bank’ sites at various locations around the borough also provide a good option, especially for those with limited space at home. Making sure our waste collection and recycling services are simple and effective not only makes life easier for residents but also means we’re doing our bit to protect our planet.

Together with our partners, we’re pushing ahead with the Golden Valley development which will bring long-term growth to our town as well as good jobs, much-needed homes and infrastructure to West Cheltenham and beyond.

The council also provides for community development, leisure, culture, street cleaning, bereavement services, and is responsible for planning permission and regeneration.
All of this is funded by your council tax payments – but do you know how much of your council tax bill goes to Cheltenham Borough Council? The answer is approximately 11%, with the rest split between policing and the County Council.

We know we have a responsibility to spend the council tax we receive wisely and I promise to continue to prioritise the services and projects that matter most to Cheltenham.
