There is so much amazing art and creativity out there, it’s a shame not to bring some of it into our homes. The magic of colour is everywhere around us; the beauty of textiles, ceramics, wood and glass. Artisan makers pour all of themselves into their work and you can tell when you’re close to what they’ve created.

I notice that people decorate a room, but don’t always pay attention to how it’s finished off and accessorised. The result can feel flat and uninteresting – it leaves you feeling dissatisfied with the room, despite your investment of time and effort.

Artists create work to be admired

It may be a confidence issue about what to choose, or investing in items simply to accessorise a room can feel frivolous and indulgent. After all, artists create artwork to be admired and generate feelings in the viewer. Their work has no practical intention. When I’m out and about and spy something that speaks to me, it usually finds its way into my home somewhere. I trust that I can find a spot that will show it off to its best advantage, and it will add something valuable to the way my home feels.

I love going in search of interiors inspiration and we’re lucky to be surrounded by a few gems. Some of my favourites that never disappoint are The Dept. of Hope, Joy and Wonder, Burford Garden Company, Little Interior Co, Baileys Home Store, Daylesford, Latchfords, and Tinsmiths, all of them wonderful, inspiring treasure troves, perfect for exploring.

Giving equal joy and satisfaction

My favourite haunts vary considerably in price, but give equal joy and satisfaction. You can gain so much just by looking at the way they display their goods, grouping together a collection or colours, styling a side table with a tray, plant or vase. All of them are masters at sourcing things to enhance the beauty and interest of our homes. If I take something home with me it has memories associated with it right from the start.

Creating a magical place to live

I also often buy pre-loved from eBay, Etsy or Vinterior. West German Pottery is a particular favourite; I love the colour and texture. I have old ceramic lamps rewired, then make, paint, or buy a shade. The result is a unique piece with its own history that deserves its place in my home. Displaying items is all part of creating a magical place to live.

You can tell when someone has intentionally styled a room – you feel the love and warmth. Unfinished rooms don’t always welcome you in the same way. An unfinished room is like making a suit and not bothering to put on the buttons. The finishing off is everything.

So here’s to the satisfaction of finding the piece you love, and the perfect spot to place and admire it ever after.
