Although the days are getting longer and spring may be just around the corner, I still find myself in need of comfort and cosiness at the start of February.
A cosy nook is a key element whenever I design a room for a client. To create your own, ask yourself – where in the room are you drawn to? Where do you go to take a little time for yourself during the day or evening? It may be the light from a window, a view to a garden, or a fire that draws you in. Whatever the attraction, that’s the place to create your nook.
The cornerstone of your nook
There are some elements that I think are essential to furnish the cosiest of corners in your home. First of all, an accent chair. Completely different to any other seating in a room, they instantly lift the spirits. Source an old chair from eBay and have it reupholstered locally in a beautiful fabric. The chair is the cornerstone of your nook. If you want to buy a new accent chair, for me the best source is, without doubt, Anthropologie. It’s an investment you’ll enjoy every day.
Cushions and a blanket are a must; soft tactile textures, the warmth of a blanket to curl up under. Latchfords in Cheltenham has a great selection of blankets, or look at some of the Welsh blankets that are around from Melin Tregwynt and FelinFach; beautiful woven wool perfect for the season.
Perfect for styling
A side table for your drink, book, phone or tablet is another key element. Side tables are perfect for styling too, with a small tray, vase, plant and of course a candle. The warmth and glow of a candle is so good for the spirit; I light one every day during autumn and winter. I have a collection of candlesticks in different shapes, materials and heights, and I love choosing candle colours that work together.
My favourite local source is Department of Hope, Joy and Wonder, or if you really want to go all in on a candle as a work of art in its own right, look no further than Wax Atelier. Their beautiful hand-dipped beeswax creations are ones to keep, standing next to your everyday flickering flames.
Satisfying a deep need for comfort
I believe every home deserves a nook; it satisfies a deep need in humans for comfort and shelter. Embrace the final weeks of the season in your special winter nook.
