Creating the home you want and love, that is right for you and suits your current needs, is life enhancing and can be transformative. Sometimes we falter when considering the decision to downsize for many reasons; memories, nostalgia, risking the investment we’ve worked so hard to build. Taking the next step can be a challenge.
There’s no doubt that it’s a big decision that can be driven by many factors, such as retirement, divorce, or a change in your personal circumstances. Whatever the driver, there are some things you can do to ensure that you make a good decision that’s right for you and your life.
Location, location, location
The first is choosing the right property in the right location. Are you looking for a property that is already renovated, or a project you can design from start to finish?
Although you may feel hesitant about taking on a big project, if you make sure it’s properly planned and enlist the right support, the build process will feel much more manageable. While you can still make some aesthetic changes to a renovated property, a project is without doubt the best way to achieve your preferred design.
Consider flow, light and storage
Designing the home of your dreams is all about getting the fundamentals right; making sure your new home is warm, dry and welcoming when you return, as well as considering that all-important flow, light and storage. The latter is particularly important when moving to a smaller property.
Consider including some bespoke cabinetry to make the most of storage options and bring a unique design touch to your new home. Smaller rooms can function much better when you build bespoke cabinets into the layout.
For the decorative scheme, look to a designer whose work you love and incorporate some of their style into your new home, or work with a designer to get the outcome you desire. Apart from elevating the final results, their input can bring experience to the whole project and save you from making costly mistakes.
A lifestyle uplift and the chance to declutter
There are so many benefits to moving to a smaller property, whether out of choice or necessity. A smaller property in a new location can deliver a lifestyle uplift, the chance to clear your unwanted clutter, time freedom and, for some, the financial freedom to live your dreams.
Downsizing gives you the opportunity to dream up the most epic version of your life and home. Focus on the design and that dream can become a reality. If 2026 is the year you decide to downsize,
I wish you the best of luck.Other Images
