Weddings are held all year round, but spring and summer celebrations tend to be the most popular, with the happy couple hedging their bets on having good weather for their big day.
If you’re lucky enough to receive an invitation, you may find yourself in a fashion dilemma, wondering what to wear. Themed weddings are increasing in popularity, and this can help with wardrobe decisions. From country and beachwear, to city chic and black tie attire, you’ll want to tailor your outfit to the vibe of each special day.
Here is my guide for helping you to choose what to wear.
Country wedding
Country weddings are a very popular, traditional choice in the UK, as we are blessed with so many wonderful country estates, converted barns, and grand houses that make perfect wedding venues.
The time of year will dictate your attire, and my advice would be to layer up. Venues out in the countryside can be susceptible to a bit of a breeze, but they can equally become sun traps on a warm summer’s day. A shawl is a great accessory that you can slip on and off throughout the day.
Invitations often indicate a dress code. For example, stately homes and hotels are likely to require a more formal dress code, whilst a converted barn may be more casual.
If you stick to an elegant maxi or mid-length dress, you will look elegant whilst remaining comfortable if it happens to be a warm, sunny day. Feminine prints and florals are always a good bet, as are delicate pastel shades. Hats and fascinators are popular at more formal occasions, so think about matching them to your dress for a wonderful co-ordinated ensemble.
No matter how well-manicured the lawns are, a country wedding is not the place for a tall stiletto! Instead, opt for a dressy espadrille or block heel to avoid sinking into the grass.
City wedding
From town hall ceremonies to smart restaurant receptions, city weddings often have a less restrictive dress code – still elegant, but perhaps a little more smart-casual.
Think two-piece suits or a flowing dress and jacket. A cocktail dress would be perfect for this type of wedding.
Smart dress shoes or high stilettos, dressy handbags, and a fancy hair accessory will finish off your outfit nicely.
Beach wedding
If you find yourself jetting off to an exotic beach ceremony, think comfort first. This is a great opportunity to enjoy lightweight, breathable fabrics such as linen, silk or cotton. A floaty kaftan would be at the top of my list.
Flat sandals are ideal for walking on the beach and can be dressed up, or a solid wedge is another good alternative. If it is very hot, a light cover up will protect you from the sun’s rays. You might want to consider simplifying your beauty regime and opting for waterproof mascara, as the heat can affect your makeup.
Black tie
A grand, formal style, black tie dress code is very popular in the USA. I once found myself the only person attending who was not in a full length gown – nothing is too over the top for a black tie affair! If full length is not your style, a very glitzy cocktail dress is still appropriate.
You may want to add some sparkle with a fancy hair accessory, as hats aren’t as common at these types of events.
If you are fortunate to attend a couple’s special day, I hope it is a memorable one for you, too.Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
