September is one of those months when we don’t want to say goodbye to summer, but we know autumn beckons. Our natural summer tan might start to fade, but with such an amazing choice of fake tans available, we can enjoy a sun-kissed look all year round.
Fashion shows for spring/summer 2026 will start in New York and Milan this month, showcasing what we can look forward to next year. High street brands will be primed and ready to replicate the big labels at much more palatable prices. Stay tuned for more.
A friend asked if I could help her plan a capsule wardrobe for an upcoming trip to Italy. She wanted to make her trip a bit easier by having minimal luggage, which left me thinking about how we can dress to impress with very little. Not an easy task for those who tend to overpack! Here are a few tips for packing light, in style.
Layering
Layering is a crucial step, which can help you prepare for unpredictable weather. Mixing and matching is key, so aim for comfortable yet stylish pieces where you will be able to make up several different outfits. Select a few basic colours that will match: neutrals like cream, beige and brown go with black, white or tan.
Experiment with tops and bottoms. Lay them out so you can see what will work and make doubling up easier. Choose fabrics that won’t overly crease – generally a mixed fabric with viscose and polyester will pack well. A light cashmere top or fine knit can prove very useful in adding a dash of glamour, but also keeping you warm if needed.
I love a silk scarf – it can dress up any outfit or bag and weighs next to nothing. You could even use it as a headscarf if your destination is a little breezy. Think Grace Kelly or our late Queen Elizabeth II.
Outerwear
A lightweight jacket which coordinates well with your chosen colour palette is a good addition, as well as a thin waterproof jacket or raincoat. Bucket hats are very popular and can be light and easy to pack. A pashmina or other wrap is essential not just for day-to-day wear on your trip but also for your travelling days.
Footwear
I believe in comfort over style, especially if you plan on exploring and getting in your steps. There’s nothing worse than getting a blister or sore feet, which can ruin any holiday. Include some blister plasters in your handbag just in case.
Trainers and stylish comfortable shoes are easily available; perhaps one pair of heels or loafers that can be worn for dressier nights out. Tights and lightweight socks don’t take up much space, so take a few pairs.
Accessories
Here is where any outfit can easily be made more glamorous and will not add much to your luggage weight. Hair accessories can glam up any night out, as can earrings, bracelets, or a chunky necklace. Perhaps pack your cheaper jewellery so you can relax and not worry about losing anything.
Small crossbody bags are useful – pick a bright colour to offset your neutrals – and a clutch for the evening can also add a bit of glitz. Finish your look with a dash of bright red lipstick to bring the whole outfit together.
Whether you are off to Europe or just a weekend away in the UK, being prepared can take the stress out of travelling. Bon voyage!Copyright © 2025 The Local Answer Limited.
