Summer may be but a memory, but we now have a lovely ‘in-between’ season to look forward to before the real winter weather kicks in. There is plenty of excitement seen in the new selection of clothes in the shops and we can discover the different looks to enjoy this autumn. Several staples remain very popular, from denim to leopard print, so let’s see what’s in store.
Colour
Red seems to be the colour of the season, including cherry, burgundy, plum and other rich hues, reminding us of a glass of deep red wine. A warmer colour, which is perfect for this time of year, you’ll see coats, jumpers and even trousers in a selection of these richer tones.
Denim
A popular, durable and timeless material, which never seems to go out of fashion, denim can be found throughout our wardrobes, from jeans to jackets. Back by popular demand, Marks and Spencer’s barrel style jeans are apparently very comfortable, thanks to their relaxed fit. Wide leg jeans continue to be a strong trend, as are baggy, cargo-style jeans. Slim-fit jeans aren’t going anywhere either. If you like jeans and denim you will be spoilt for choice this season.
Denim will complement any top you choose from the red shade range mentioned above. But if these shades are not for you, a crisp white shirt or blouse always adds a fresh feel. Waistcoats remain popular, not just in fabrics but also in knits – an added touch to dress up jeans, as well as adding warmth.
Tweed
Outlander, the successful TV series filmed in Scotland, has caught the imagination of many designers who have included tweeds on the catwalk. Chanel certainly favoured tweed, but with modern twists to complement the classic look. No dull ‘tweedy’ hues, but a mix of vibrant light-coloured palettes, alongside a soft shade of pink and cobalt blue.
The famous tweed Chanel jacket is often softened with a neck-bow or a light chiffon blouse, with pearls to finish the look.
Tweed has a timeless appeal and, depending on the quality of production, it’s a more sustainable option – an antidote to throwaway fashion. Harris Tweed’s wonderful heritage appeals to modern customers who prefer to invest in quality garments. With many patterns including herringbone and houndstooth, as well as the traditional checks and plaids, there’s something for everyone.
Great Scot is a Scottish firm renowned for their high quality tweed clothes. From ponchos to kilts, scarves to skirts, they have a great selection for both male and female customers.
Men’s trends
We often focus on women’s fashion, but many men like to follow trends and keep their wardrobes feeling fresh. The skinny legged tight trouser and short fitted jacket take a back seat to more relaxed tailoring this autumn, featuring neutral shades as well as bold patterns and quality fabric.
Suits will be roomier and feel more comfortable with relaxed cuts, whilst polo shirts have an updated look, also offering a cosier fit. Soft jumpers and voluminous cardigans all support this trend of comfortable, yet stylish, dressing. Don’t forget to accessorise with belts, jewellery and sunglasses.
Enjoy embracing the autumn weather and its new trends.Copyright © 2025 The Local Answer Limited.
