Pucker up for Valentine’s Day

There are several theories of the origins of Valentine’s Day, or what was commonly called Saint Valentine’s Day. Often associated with martyrdom and later with the feast of Saint Valentine on February 14th, this day then became linked with romantic love in the 14th and 15th centuries.
Fast forward to 2026 and it seems to have evolved into a day not just to celebrate love between a romantically involved couple, but also with children, grandparents and everyone in between, making it a very commercialised date. Chocolates and underwear are popular gifts, but I thought it was a good time to concentrate on our lips!
Barcode lip lines
Sadly, as we age, skin loses elasticity and volume, which increases those fine lines mostly above our top lip. These are seen as vertical lines resembling a barcode, hence the name often used in the beauty industry. Plastic surgeons are asked if they can be eliminated and, while there are certain procedures that might reduce the lines, there are also ways we can help ourselves.
Causes
It is important we understand the common causes, starting with ageing. We cannot turn the clock back, but as we age we lose collagen and elastin, making the skin thinner and less resilient. Pursing our lips to smoke a cigarette or vape is one of the worst culprits, so this is another great reason to quit. Repetitive movements such as smiling, talking and sipping through straws also tend to etch lines into the skin. Sun exposure and those pesky UV rays break down the collagen and elastin, which helps accelerate the fine lines. Genetics also play a role.
Prevention
There is nothing that will eliminate the ‘barcodes’ as they are part of the ageing process, but there are simple ideas that could minimise or delay the onset. Cleanse by gently washing your lips as part of your routine. Exfoliate twice weekly with a soft toothbrush or gentle lip scrub; gentle being the key word.
Applying a lip balm regularly on damp lips at night can help with hydration. The Ordinary offers an exfoliating lip serum for £7.60 at Boots or, if you’re feeling extravagant, Chanel’s Rouge Coco Baume offers a dual colour and care function for £37. Sun protection is also crucial; choose a lip balm with a minimum SPF of 30.
Lip stains
Now we have a good lip care routine, it’s time to enjoy making our lips look lovely. Lip liner followed by a favourite lipstick has been a popular combination for years. Post careful application, we often notice that after our first drink there is more lipstick on the glass or cup than is left on our lips – very frustrating!
The good news is, lip stain pens have grown in popularity over the last few years. The key with these stain pens is that they contain stronger pigment, which doesn’t disappear when we take a sip of our drink. They are very easy to apply, but go slowly with your application until you’re familiar with them – you can always add more.
NYX Cosmetics’ Lip Lingerie Lip Liner Stain holds its colour and is reasonably priced at £10.99. Charlotte Tilbury, Victoria Beckham, Chanel and many other brands offer lip liners with long-lasting colour. Now you just need to find a shade that suits you!Copyright © 2026 The Local Answer Limited.
