April showers bring spring flowers; so the saying goes. 2020 brings the return of the old classic trench coat.

Burberry

If you were to purchase a Burberry, this would be considered an investment, as they are priced outside most people’s budgets.

However, they have certainly moved with the times and alongside the classic beige with chequered lining or adornments, this season if you have a spare £1,890 you can have yourself a very smart black Burberry trench coat with a gorgeous leopard trim. I never tire of saying animal prints are here to stay for the foreseeable future.

The Burberry heritage range is slightly kinder on your wallet at £750, but it is a classic and will stand the test of time.

When you purchase a Burberry ‘Mac’ you are buying into a small slice of history. Thomas Burberry founded his first shop in Basingstoke in 1856, and went on to supply weather-proof gabardine coats to the WW1 soldiers in the trenches; hence the name trench coat.

Now we have the likes of Billie Eilish who, at only 18 years of age, has a number one hit with her new James Bond song ‘No Time to Die’. At the recent BRIT awards she was kitted out head to toe in Burberry – even her fingernails. This is great advertising for the brand, as it is desired worldwide by all age groups and is easily recognisable.

Aquascutum

This is another understated British style brand also famed for their rainwear. Aquascutum actually pre-dated Burberry by five years as it was founded in 1851 – the year of the Great Exhibition.

The tailor John Emary opened a high end menswear shop in Regent Street, now sadly closed, but an Aquascutum shop can be found at 24 Great Marlborough Street in Soho, in case you want to indulge when you are next in London!

Prices are slightly more reasonable than Burberry for a good quality classic men’s and women’s beige raincoat. Expect to pay in the region of £695 and up for ladies’, and the men’s can range from £650 for a short jacket style rain coat. One must bear in mind these are quality garments and this is what you are paying for.

French Connection

Men who do not want a classic trench coat look can find a great navy and black biker jacket with lots of stylish quilting in the French Connection premium line for £395. Match this with their premium quality stretch jeans for £70 and you will have the look of the season.

Primark

At the other end of the market, Primark has rainwear in classic beige for under £30. In fact, all the high street shops are well stocked in every colour and price range, for both men and women; so who cares if it rains! Enjoy browsing and finding a style that works for you.
