Not that it ever truly goes away, but this autumn/winter season (AW18) you will see denim like never before. Take your pick from jeans, jumpsuits, dresses, suits, blazers and more – shops will be awash with new denim styles and fabrics. All the well known high street shops from Mango to Zara, and even Marks and Spencer will be fighting for a slice of the denim market.
This season’s crop does however differ from denim of old. Firstly it is certainly not that stiff, sometimes harsh fabric from back in the day that took lots of washes to soften. The latest offerings sport more pared back tailoring, with softer mixed fibres such as elastine, which gives a gentle stretch and can be very flattering.
Denim can be suitable for all ages so do not immediately assume denim is not for you, as you might be missing out on a perfect addition for your wardrobe, which will stand the test of time. Consider adding just one item if you are hesitant.
Lands’ End
Lands’ End is a great US clothing company with a new soft denim collection that you can buy in the UK. It has a unique double weave textured fabric, which is so supple it can be mistaken for jersey – very comfortable indeed. The range comes in dresses, joggers, skirts and jeans.
Ralph Lauren
One of my favourite designers always has some denim in their collections and their new season does not disappoint. They have delivered lots of gorgeous jackets – including military styles – in a variety of denim shades from darker shades all the way through to white.
Denim & Supply is part of the Ralph Lauren range and is generally styled for younger customers, with the same exceptional quality. You might pay a little more for this brand but you can be assured of the best made items that do not cut corners in any way. I have pieces that are as good today as they were ten years ago – you get what you pay for.
Denim Boots
Perhaps one of the biggest fashion faux pas recently was Jennifer Lopez wearing £1,700 denim slouch over the knee boots from the Versace 2019 collection, resembling jeans falling down! They had black detailing on them with sewn on pockets around the boot. I doubt very much they will be a hit; in fact she made headlines due to just how ridiculous they looked. No doubt we will see varying versions of denim boots for the autumn, which will hopefully be more wearable and visually appealing!
Accessories
Hats, bags, shoes, trainers – these are all items you can add a splash of denim to if you don’t want to go all out. Any of these will add that little touch which will bring you the new 2018 look. I have my eye on a great denim suit at intropia.com but might just have to wait for the sale!Other Images
