The Bath-based theatre company Apricity Theatre are set to tour the final production in their three-part Shakespeare adaptation series next month.

The final production, entitled ‘The Breach’, is a reworking of the Shakespeare drama ‘Henry V’, written by Apricity co-founder Charlotte Turner-McMullan.

Alongside co-founder Hannah Mosettig, Charlotte started the company during her final year studying Drama and Creative Writing at Bath Spa University.

“In our first lecture of our final year our lecturer said, “no ones going to give you a job, so you’ve got to make one yourself”, so we did,” said Charlotte.

“We’re still an emerging company but we’re starting to branch out into the South West, producing a combination of new writing and adaptations.”

The company has been going for six years now and works closely with other local organisations including Black Dog Productions and Bath Spa University.

Charlotte’s connection with the university – where she went on to study for a Masters and PhD – lead to the partnership between Apricity, with the series of adaptations feeding into research at the university.

“After my BA I went on to study a Masters in Performing Shakespeare and developed a good working relationship with my tutor,” she continued.

“I want to use Apricity as a way to not only explore themes and theories related to studies but also as a platform to attract wider audiences and make the shows more accessible.”

‘The Breach’ is the third and final adaptation in this series, following ‘Fall of Kings’ – an adaptation of Richard II – and ‘Between the Armies’ (Henry IV Part 1 and 2), all of which were re-imagined by Charlotte.

She said: “The Breach is a modern-day version of ‘Henry V’ that explores the masculinity theory.

“The original story explores themes like class divides and gender issues. When it came to reworking it a lot of the conversation I wanted to explore was already there.

“In the story there’s a war in Ireland, a war in France, lots of infighting. People have asked if it’s a Brexit play but while our version isn’t, I can see why they’d say that!”

The show begins at the Rondo Theatre in Bath on Friday 28th June before going on to Bristol, and finally finishing with a performance at the Cotswold Playhouse, Stroud, on Saturday 20th July.
