The world-famous Treorchy Male Choir are to grace the stage at the Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury on Saturday 19th May.
The concert has been organised by the Lions Club of Cheltenham to raise money in aid of local cancer care, with the acclaimed welsh choir singing a range of celebrated hymns plus songs made famous by the likes of Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole. “We’re incredibly excited to be performing at the Roses Theatre, especially as it’s for such a good cause,” said Selwyn Jones, secretary of the choir. “We’ve had the pleasure of performing in Gloucestershire countless times before, we’re all really looking forward to getting on stage at Tewkesbury and raising money for a charity that does so much to help so many people,” added Selwyn.
Commenting on the performance at Tewkesbury, Selwyn says the choir will stick to their tried and tested routine of combining Welsh hymns with popular music from the most well-known vocalists in the world. “It’ll be a varied programme of music. A lot of people enjoy the traditional Welsh hymns so we always sing plenty of those, but we’ll also be singing some songs like ‘You Raise Me Up’ which Westlife covered. We also do a Nat King Cole medley, some of Frank Sinatra’s most famous songs and usually a few songs from musicals. Whatever your music tastes, you’re bound to be catered for,” said Selwyn.
The choir, who practice twice a week in the village of Treorchy, have toured all over the world, with numerous appearances in front of royalty and heads of state. The choir have shared stages and recording studios with the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Jon Bon Jovi, Andrea Bocelli and Katherine Jenkins.
One of the choir’s most memorable performances of recent years came in 2014 when they performed for Prince Albert of Monaco. Continued Selwyn: “We sang in the Hotel De Paris, the luxury hotel in Monte Carlo. Later that evening Prince Albert of Monaco invited us to his palace and gave us a guided tour of the building. We ventured down into his cellar and ended up singing down there because the acoustics were so good!
“There’s something very special about performing on stage. We call ourselves the Treorchy family. We’re together through the highs and the lows and support each other through tough times.
“The choir has built up such a great reputation over the years, we’re always in demand. We’re taking bookings now for two years ahead! We’ve been lucky enough to have played at some of the most fabulous venues all over the world, it’s hard to say a favourite venue. The tour to Australia and New Zealand back in 2009 was a special one. I’d only joined the choir the year before, so to get an opportunity to fly to the other side of the world and play at the most amazing venues was very exciting.”
Caroline Lawrence, Head of Marketing at the theatre, says the demand for the concert has been so high, only a handful of tickets remain. She said: “We are delighted to be hosting the Treorchy Male Choir at The Roses for the first time since 2011. They are proving to be just as popular as always, with only a limited amount of tickets still available for their fundraising concert.”Other Images
