Saxophonist, singer and songwriter Kim Cypher has carved out a successful few years for herself in the world of jazz.
In the last few years she’s played a private show in New York, been commissioned to perform by Prime Minister Theresa May, and sold out venues across the UK.
Following a debut album featuring a mixture of original compositions and classic jazz covers that was very well received, her second album is set for release next month.
“My new album 'Love Kim x' follows my first album 'Make Believe' which I released at the end of 2016,” she explained. “Make Believe' was inspired by my absolute belief in following dreams and included a selection of original tracks and favourites.
“It was my first music release after myself and my husband (Mike Cypher, drummer) both took the plunge and gave up our day jobs to pursue our musical dreams.
“Love Kim x' is a tribute to all my wonderful followers and supporters who really keep me going. I’m blessed to have the most loyal, devoted followers, many of whom have become great friends.”
Kim’s passion for her latest work is clear as she runs through some of her favourite tracks, and also reveals some of the very special guests that feature on the album.
She continued: “I’m very proud of the music on this album, which includes some very special original tracks including an epic anthem 'Rising From The Dust' featuring New York guitarist B.D. Lenz and The Kentwood Show Choir.
“There’s also 'Highland Mike' featuring Pee Wee Ellis (saxophonist and musical director with James Brown and Van Morrison), a track composed in memory of a friend Mike Carter.”
“Another original track is dedicated to Karen Jackson (from Cheltenham) who is a total inspiration to me and many others.
“I met Karen by chance at one of my performances at The Daffodil around 18 months ago. She came up to me at the end of the gig to say how much she'd enjoyed my music. We chatted for a while and it was clear that we just instantly clicked.
“As she walked away she was clearly in pain so I asked her if she was ok. It was then I found out the incredible personal struggle this lovely lady was going through. She talks very openly about her breast cancer, the operations, treatment and how her illness has progressed but still she fights on with this incredible positive attitude and outlook.
“Before I knew it, I had composed a song all about Karen. The song is called 'Maybe...' and is a song of hope for anyone who needs a bit of hope in their life. It was this song that kick-started my second album.
“So, if I hadn't met Karen that night I most likely wouldn't be releasing my 2nd album this year!"
Kim’s album tour launches on Friday 8th February as part of Cleeve Concerts at Bishop’s Cleeve Tithe Barn.
It’s clear that Kim can’t wait to get underway, especially as she will finally be performing live with one of jazz’s biggest names.
She added: “The event will be quite spectacular with my killer tour band plus special guest Pee Wee Ellis.
“I first started working with Pee Wee when I asked him if he would give me some tuition to help me further my saxophone playing. I had followed him for a while and loved his style. Pee Wee is most certainly a legend and a player that I hold in very high esteem.
“Thankfully, Pee Wee saw something in me that he believed in and so we began our journey. I learnt so much from him. Just to be in his presence and hear him play is overwhelming.”
