London based Trojan Sound System are set to play Gloucester Guildhall as part of the Trojan Record Label’s 50th Anniversary celebrations.
Trojan was the record company that brought reggae music and culture back into contemporary clubs and festivals in the UK.
An institution in British sound system culture, the talented team of selectors and vocalists relentlessly tour the globe, representing one of the most seminal reggae and ska record labels in history.
Founded in 1968, the British record label Trojan was instrumental in introducing reggae to a global audience and in the 1970s had secured a series of major UK chart hits with Tony Tribe, Lee "Scratch" Perry's Upsetters, Bob and Marcia, Desmond Dekker, The Maytals and many more.
This year the record company has been the subject of a feature length documentary, entitled ‘Rudeboy’, that tells the story of the company’s origins and struggles to break reggae into the mainstream.
The film also explains the origins of “sound systems” – parties that the Jamaican communities in England would hold to listen to reggae music.
For the past decade, Trojan Sound System have headlined club shows, captivated festival crowds and supported legendary Jamaican acts such as the Wailers, Luciano and the late great Gregory Isaacs to name but a few.
Mixing styles and flavours from the past 40 years, the Trojan crew are ignited by uplifting vocals from their MC trio – Superfour, Chucky Bantan and Jah Buck.
The Sound System’s vocalists have twenty years’ experience as members of the foundation South London sound systems, and they have been chosen as the absolute cream of London’s reggae entertainers.
Selector Daddy Ad hails from the ‘Roots and Reality’ sound system and has always pushed for new sounds and acts to break though. His experience as a drummer and audiophile has led Ad in a direction to be responsible for the crew’s FXs, mixing and trademark sound.
A must see for any reggae and ska fan, Trojan Sound System will play Gloucester Guildhall on Friday 30th November. Support on the night comes from local band King Solomon Soundsystem.
