First Time For Everything programme gives older generations the chance to try new hobbies

A programme called ‘First Time For Everything’ (FTFE) is being run in Stroud to get people over the age of 55 out experiencing new things.
The activities, which are organised by the Royal Voluntary Service, involve everything from Tai Chi to ‘Bat Walks’.
Abbie James, Royal Voluntary Service activity coordinator for Gloucestershire explains how the programme came about.
She said: “Our research showed that 65% of people over the age of 60 wanted to try new activities, but they also felt there weren’t enough local opportunities to do so.
“We do 14 different activities a year and they have to be quirky, so it’s my job to come up with new ideas.”
The programme is sponsored by Prudential, meaning all activities are free to attend, but anyone hoping to attend must book in advance.
“If someone really enjoys an activity,” continued Abbie, “Royal Voluntary Service is also able to provide funding so that they can continue with it.
“So if someone really takes to yoga after trying it in FTFE we can help to provide more classes for them.”
Abbie lives in Stroud and runs the activities in the area, with this year being the second year of ‘First Time For Everything’.
She added: “Last year we got really great feedback on the activities – everyone said they loved the chance to try something new.
“This year I’m hoping to see a lot of returning faces, I do all the events in Stroud and the surrounding area to try and maintain continuity.”
Upcoming events include ‘Walks with Hawks’, perfume making, Bollywood dancing and felt making.
The Royal Voluntary Service is one of the largest voluntary service organisations in the country, with the aim to inspire and enable 20,000 volunteers to give their skills, experience, energy and time to help people in need in hospitals, at home and in the community.
