Sudeley Castle, one of the most popular tourist attractions in the county, has joined forces with the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, giving visitors the chance to immerse themselves in the native wildlife of Gloucestershire.
The majestic castle, made famous by its links to Anne Boleyn, Katherine Parr, Lady Jane Grey and Elizabeth I, has collaborated with the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust to offer visitors the chance to enjoy the native wildlife and learn more about the animals that inhabit the castle grounds. The new wildlife trail includes a wide variety of animals, from birds and bats to hedgehogs and toads.
Will Masefield, community action project manager at Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, is delighted to have formed the new attraction. He said: “Our UK wildlife continues to decline, with one species in 10 at risk of extinction in the country. We are delighted to have worked with Sudeley Castle on their new autumn trail. The castle gardens and grounds are home to a wealth of wildlife and this trail will highlight many wonderful facts about UK native species, as well simple tips we can all do to help protect our local wildlife for the future.”
Tess Hirst, visitor services manager at Sudeley Castle, added: “There are fewer places as pretty as the Cotswolds in Autumn, and a visit to Sudeley Castle at this time of year is a real treat.
“Our autumn wildlife trail will bring our guests closer to nature as they follow a trail around the castle gardens to find a series of bird boxes, each containing fun information about a range of creatures. Younger visitors can collect stamps on their activity sheets which they can then take home to colour-in.
“Throughout September and October, families can follow a route around the grounds of the Winchcombe attraction, finding out about some of the creatures that call our countryside home.”
The wildlife trail will run throughout September and October, including the half term holidays. On Wednesday 24th October, children will also be able to take part in a Halloween family fun day at the Castle from 10am-4pm. Entry to the fun day and the wildlife trail is free with admission tickets.
