A journey through the seasons in Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire is known for being one of the country’s most photogenic areas, so what better way to celebrate its beauty than with a photobook dedicated to the county?
That’s exactly what local photographer Aleks Gjika has done. Born in Albania but now living in Gloucester, Aleks’ love for his new home inspired him to put together the book, which compiles 126 different photographs of the countryside and the cities, towns, and villages of the county, from the Forest of Dean to Gloucester Cathedral.
“Gloucestershire In Photographs” makes for an ideal coffee table book, as each page features simply a photograph and a caption detailing the location in which it was taken. The book is split into the four seasons – spring, summer, autumn and winter – and this really highlights the variety of different sights the county has to offer.
In spring, we are shown flowers blossoming and an array of wild animals, including adorable otters. Summer features sunshine and plenty more stunning landscapes, such as a poppy field in Cirencester.
This follows through to Autumn, as the leaves begin to change colour and fall, and finally into winter, when the countryside is blanketed by snow and frost. The vividness of the photographs can make you feel as though you are experiencing the seasons as you read them.
My favourite is the image of the wild boar and bluebells in the Forest of Dean.
The book really does capture every part of Gloucestershire, from the serenity of Cleeve Hill at sunset, to the party atmosphere of the Cheltenham races. It’s an ideal book for locals and visitors to discover new places in all their glory.
