The Westonbirt Arboretum near Tetbury is the national arboretum of the UK, and this month will be hosting its very own Christmas event.
The Enchanted Christmas will reveal a new side to the arboretum, which was founded by Victorian landowner Robert Holford in the 19th century.
Rebecca Hare, Marketing and Communications Manager at Westonbirt, explains what exactly an arboretum is, its importance in terms of scientific research, and just how popular the place is amongst visitors.
She said: “An arboretum is a botanical collection of trees which have been chosen because they are rare, exotic, interesting or beautiful.
“Westonbirt contains 15,000 specimen trees, 2,500 species, and today attracts 500,000 visitors a year who come to take in nature at its most beautiful.
“The arboretum is also a vital resource for scientists and researchers looking into climate change, pests and diseases, and the impact modern living has upon trees and how we can work to preserve them.”
The arboretum will be transformed this month, with decorations, illuminations and a Christmas village that will enhance the natural beauty of the trees and plants during the night-time.
Rebecca continued: “The main feature will be the beautiful illuminated trail, which takes visitors through the heart our tree collection – along the way there will be stunning spectacles, interactive displays and breath-taking sights.
“There will also be the Christmas village, in which visitors will be able to pick up a cup of mulled wine or hot chocolate, browse the Christmas stalls where local craftsmen will be showcasing their heritage skills, get involved in some arts and crafts activities, and listen to Christmas choirs.
“Also keep an eye out for a very special Christmas guest who will be visiting form the North Pole and walking around the village to meet everyone!”
The event is not an easy one to organise and Rebecca explains just how much planning and effort goes into making sure every year is perfect.
Rebecca said: “Work starts in January for the following December! We work with partners to decide the new route, the new illuminated displays, the layout of the Christmas Village, getting in touch with Father Christmas in the North Pole, and this all takes place throughout the year.”
The Enchanted Christmas event will be held on selected dates from the 1st-23rd December from 4pm-9pm, and Rebecca believes it’s a must see for any family this Christmas.
She said: “It really is the perfect location for a Christmas family outing! The trees provide a wonderful setting for a Christmas display, and we very much use the trees and natural features to create the most spectacular light displays.
“The trail takes you right into the heart of the Old Arboretum, so you are completely immersed in the festive display. It’s such a wonderful family event, and it’s fantastic to see so many people return with their children and grandchildren every year as part of their Christmas tradition.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
