Cheltenham’s Hardwick Gallery is to host an exhibition focusing on the effect the First World War had on the people of Cheltenham. The exhibition, which runs from 28th August – 2nd September, will document the impact the Great War had on the town, especially on the lives of the soldiers who travelled to mainland Europe to fight.

Debra Baker has been instrumental in curating the exhibition and says it is a fitting tribute to the men of Cheltenham who made the ultimate sacrifice. She said: “The main focus of the exhibition is on the soldiers from Cheltenham who fought in the Great War.

“Cheltenham, like so many towns and cities in the UK, was hit incredibly hard by the First World War. One hundred years ago Cheltenham was a lot smaller than it is today so the loss of so many young men had a huge impact on the town. Over 20 men who lived on Queen Street lost their lives on the battlefields of northern Europe.

“The exhibition will include a commemoration wall with photographs and exhibits that will tell the story of the impact the war had on Cheltenham.”

The Hardwick Gallery is part of the University of Gloucestershire’s Hardwick Campus. It is located on St Paul’s Road, just a short walk from the centre of Cheltenham.
Entry to the exhibition is free of charge.
