Gloucester Cathedral this month will play host to an art exhibition like no other.
A ‘Wearable Art’ competition will see creatives from all around the country taking to a catwalk to display their creations.
“Wearable Art is any art that can be worn on the body,” explained Julia Davies, one of the Art Couture Painswick team, who have been running the competition for other a decade.
“We encourage people to design and make their costumes from all age groups – from children up to professional makers and designers. They design into a theme, and the themes this year are Robotics and Biomimicry. We also have a bodypainting category.”
After ten years of holding the Wearable Art in the village of Painswick, this year will see the event moved to Gloucester Cathedral, something Julia and the team are very excited about.
She said: “We are thrilled to be in such an amazing venue with a wonderful setting in Gloucestershire and we are excited to be taking the catwalk and competition to a new audience this year.
“The Cathedral often have world class art exhibitions, so we are pleased to be in this list.”
Entries to the competition closed at the end of May, with the only stipulation being that the artists must adhere to one of the themes of either ‘Biomimicry’ or ‘Robotics’.
“This is open to individual interpretation and there really are no boundaries to what this may look like!” added Julia.
“We always attract a wide range of entrants – we encourage as many local people to get involved in entering or coming along to watch and support.
“We do however attract a high standard of makers from all over the country, and the competition has a reputation for hosting amazing body painters.”
The competition will be judged by a team of experts, including tailor Emma Wills, MBE, world famous Makeup Artist Alex Box and Susanna Buxton, Emmy Award Winning Costume Designer.
The Wearable Art showcase will be at Gloucester Cathedral on Friday 14th June.
“We have seen over the years many of our entrants grow through the process and many are now working as professional makers and designers,” said Julia.
“We are also a charity – nurturing and supporting talent in our entrants is one of our aims.”
