Seasonal gifts for travellers

It’s gift-giving time again! We’ve looked at travel watches, books and DVDs before, so how about some different gift ideas for travellers this December?

From stocking-filling adventure accessories to holidays of a lifetime, here are some suggestions to whet your gift-giving imagination – or inspire your seasonal wishlist!

Whether walking the Cotswolds, the Alps or further afield, a cheap Lifesystems Tick Card may not be the most exciting gift but it could save someone’s life – maybe yours. Also for walkers, young and old alike, quality walking poles really make a difference. We’ve used Leki Makalu poles for years; now we’re evaluating a well-rated pair of folding Black Diamond trekking poles.

Merino wool is your friend

Mrs H has worn Canadian Tilley hats for decades and loves them – and their lifetime guarantee. While we’re on the subject of clothing, last year’s Via Gottardo walk reminded us that Merino wool underwear, socks and base layers are your friends in hot or cold weather. On that same walk, our Osprey Stratos and Sirrus backpacks performed brilliantly. The company’s range and reputation speak volumes: treat someone!

Depending on the season, if you’re heading for Scotland in 2024, a good midge repellent is essential. We’ve used an integrated range of Incognito products north of the border as well as abroad and found them effective against midges, mosquitoes and other insects. We’ve also heard good things about Scotland’s home-grown Smidge brand. Midges begone!

The iconic Swiss Army Knife

From aspiring classics, let’s move to the iconic travel tool that has seen service from London’s commuter land to Himalayan heights and NASA space programs. On land, sea or in space, there’s a place for a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife in anyone’s luggage. I’ve carried a Swiss Champ on my travels since the 1980s. For something much smaller, the diminutive 18-function Mini Champ punches powerfully above its meagre 50g! (Please be careful when using sharp objects.)

Still seeking an affordable last-minute stocking filler for someone with wanderlust? Foam ear plugs, microfibre travel towels, Superfeet insoles or a multifunctional Shemagh scarf like TV adventurer Simon Reeve’s are sure winners. And then there’s the classic travel pillow – for decades, the air travellers’ secret weapon against long-haul fatigue.

Travel gives pleasure and value before, during and after a trip. If someone special has a big birthday or anniversary in 2024, how about treating them to an unforgettable holiday? Will it be a dream African safari, Trans-Canadian rail adventure or an expedition voyage to Antarctica on one of Hurtigruten’s eco-friendly hybrid vessels? Now there’s a thought! Season’s greetings everyone!
