One night in Frankfurt

Back in my university days, many travels ago, it was 70s rockers 10cc who sang about ‘One Night in Paris’. I may do a later article on that theme, but this time, for anyone planning a long rail trip back from south-east Europe soon, it’s Frankfurt-am-Main, in Germany, where we’ll dine and sleep before continuing home.
With renewed interest in eco-friendly European rail travel, it’s easy to end up somewhere like Budapest, Prague or Pristina with the prospect of a long trans-European trip, before a very late arrival in London. And then there’s the possibility of a ‘stupid-o’clock’ return to Gloucestershire. We faced this last year after visiting Vienna. Fortunately, a whistle-stop overnight in Frankfurt transformed the journey.
The lively Bahnhofsviertel
Despite being Germany’s mighty financial capital, Frankfurt offers a lot for leisure visitors. There’s the historic Römer district, 360-degree panoramas from the 56-storey Main Tower, the Senckenberg Natural History Museum and impressive botanical gardens for starters. But when, as we did, you arrive early evening with another long train journey the next day, it’ll probably be the lively Bahnhofsviertel, a tasty supper and a comfy bed that hits the spot.
Okay, so the station quarter has a seedy side – including the city’s red-light district – but it is also home to good hotels and vibrant nightlife. From what was once one of Frankfurt’s edgiest Bezirke, the area between Mainzer Landstraße and the riverside Mainuferpark is now among the coolest ‘Mainhattan’ neighbourhoods. And of course, as its name suggests, it’s convenient for the station.
Lebanese culinary delights
As ever, when trip planning, the usual review sites will be your allies. We found a great room at the stylish, art-themed Premier Inn on Elbestraße; it’s an easy 10-minute walk from the trains. After freshening up and a pre-supper stroll, it was Du Liban restaurant (Weserstraße 17) that delighted with delicious Lebanese food, reasonable prices and great service. Afterwards, a quick stroll in the Taunusanlage – the oasis-like park ringing Frankfurt’s central skyscrapers – was perfect before bed.
In the morning, the relaxed hotel breakfast was superb before we ambled back to the station and caught a DB ICE express to Brusselles-Midi and our Eurostar connection. Our time in Austria was great, but we’re so glad we broke the return journey as we did. And of course, Du Liban’s Yakhni and Fatayer Bissabanikh, washed down with Lebanese Almazza Pils were sublime. In fact, given the brevity of our stay, so was what we saw of Frankfurt. We’ll be back!Other Images
