Anyone wanting to take up tennis after being wowed by the performances of Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams at this year’s Wimbledon should get themselves down to Churchdown Tennis Club later this month.
That’s because on Monday 27th August, which is a bank holiday, the club are a holding a ‘Try Tennis for Free’ day when anyone and everyone – adults, families and youngsters – are invited to go along and get involved.
The day starts at noon and finishes at 4pm and the club’s chairman Jonathan Evans is certainly hoping for a big turnout.
“We are trying to increase our profile in the area,” he explained.
Those going along on the last Monday of the month – the club play on two hard courts behind the main Churchdown Social Club, which is opposite the Old Elm pub – will be provided with tennis rackets and balls so that they can have a hit.
The go-ahead club have around 50 members and when club captain Mike Speke spoke to The Local Answer in May he said the club were looking to attract the next generation of players who could help drive the club forward.
“The junior section is a big thing for us,” he said.
“We are holding coaching sessions for under-9s and under-12s on Saturday mornings and they are being organised by our head coach Neil Cornish.”
And while the juniors are obviously very important, there is plenty for the adults as well.
The club run two men’s teams that compete in the Gloucestershire Summer League and are also hoping to establish a ladies’ team.
