Teenager Charlotte Russell wins first national singles title

Charlotte Russell is celebrating after winning her first national singles title.
The 15-year-old, who lives in Montpellier in Cheltenham, has just won the 16&U GB Winter National title.
She clinched the title after pulling through five tough matches and what makes the success even more special is that she had to overcome jetlag to achieve her goal.
The previous week she had been competing in Bermuda, reaching the singles quarter-finals and the doubles final of an 18&U ITF (world ranking event).
The pupil at High School for Girls in Gloucester said: “It’s been a busy 10 days, but I am really enjoying the journey.
“Playing in the ITF was great and I lost to the eventual winner from America. I had my chances in that match and every loss is a chance to learn a bit more to improve on.
“And coming straight back and winning my first singles national event is something I’m really proud of.”
Charlotte and her coach, dad Peter Russell, are big on goal setting and it is something they have done since Charlotte was young.
Achieving a national singles title was one of the goals on the list and it makes the many sacrifices she has had to make worthwhile.
“Yes, I do miss out on seeing my school friends and I try to make up for that when I can,” she said.
“However, I really do enjoy what I’m doing. I know I am incredibly lucky in having my dad as my coach as he’s one of the best coaches in the country.
“He’s played on the ATP Tour and has coached players who have played and won matches at Grand Slam, Davis Cup and Fed Cup level.
“He understands the emotions involved in playing and the work you have to put into place.
“He has always instilled in me the importance of tennis being a long-term game and it is not just about being a good junior, it is also about putting the right things in place so that you have a chance to transition into senior tennis.”
And while Charlotte’s dad has played a big part in her success, he is keen to stress that it is something she very much deserves.
“Charlotte has worked very hard to achieve this national title and I am extremely proud of her,” he said.
“It can’t always be easy having your dad as your coach but she copes with it very well and is very receptive – we do have fun together!
“I enjoy working with all of my players, from mini-tennis upwards, and it is great to see the improvements that many are making.
“I also think that it is important for players to see that the successes and results that come follow on from hard work and belief in what you are doing.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
