Building work at Wimbledon offers East Glos chance to host the British Seniors’ Closed Grass Court Tennis Championships
Author: Contributed, Posted: Monday, 7th August 2017, 11:50
East Glos Club in Cheltenham is to host the British Seniors’ Closed Grass Court Championships (35-55 age groups).
A total of 180 competitors will take part in the event which runs from Sunday 13th August to Saturday 19th August.
The tournament usually takes place at Wimbledon but due to construction work taking place at the home of grasscourt tennis – a roof is being built on number one court – East Glos have been chosen as the alternative venue.
The club were chosen due to their excellent facilities, the condition and quantity of grass courts and suitable wet weather back-up on site.
The event promises to deliver a very high standard of competitive tennis, including current and former international and county standard players.
Former professional players in the 35 age groups include Barry Fulcher, Simon Dickson, Chris Lewis and Holly Mowling.
Fulcher will be looking to extend his unbeaten record of 38 straight matches in UK Seniors’ Championships but faces tough competition from Dickson and Lewis, along with Tim Webster and Zane Cheeseman.
Mowling, meanwhile, will be looking to avenge her defeat in the Seniors’ Clay Court Championships final at the hands of Debbie-Louise Hale, who is playing in only her second Seniors’ event.
Gloucestershire players also feature in the entry lists, a notable number playing in the men’s 50 singles, where Ben Knapp, Brian Levine, Jimmy Haycraft and Neil Howitt feature in the entry lists. Also taking part is East Glos coach Mark Willis from the county of Avon.
Play starts at 11am each day except for Sunday 13th when the start time will be noon. Spectators are very welcome and entry is free.Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
