East Glos hosts big county tennis week

There will be even more serves, volleys and forehand winners than usual at East Glos this week when the Cheltenham club hosts the LTA Aegon Ladies County Week.

The competition starts today and runs until Friday and Gloucestershire are competing in Division Six along with teams from North of Scotland, Dorset, Wiltshire, Bedfordshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

It’s free to watch with play starting at approximately 10am every day.

Included in the Gloucestershire side is in-form 15-year old Charlotte Russell, who last week reached the last four of an International Tennis Federation 18&U clay court event at Bristol.

She was beaten 6-2, 6-1 by the number two seed in the semi-final but her mum Melissa added: “It was a good experience to play a player of that level and was a good end to the last three weeks.”

Those last three weeks have also seen her win a national title in Scotland and also finish as runner-up in an ITF doubles event.

“I am so pleased with my results,” said Charlotte. “Reaching the last four of the singles in another ITF event was much more than I was expecting.
“It moves things slightly further forward for me as my new 18&U world ranking means I can get into more tournaments and hopefully create more opportunities.”

Meanwhile the men’s county team are in Felixstowe for their group five games against Leicestershire, Warwickshire, West of Scotland, Durham and Cleveland and Nottinghamshire.
