Rising Star: Yali Zmora, Cheltenham Swimming and Water Polo Club
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Tuesday, 12th September 2023, 14:00
An up-and coming swimmer has recently returned from the USA with three medals.
Yali Zmora was representing Team GB in the JCC Maccabi Games in Fort Lauderdale and the 13-year-old Balcarras School pupil certainly made a big splash.
“He won a 400-yard freestyle relay bronze, a 100 freestyle bronze and a 200-yard medley relay gold,” said his proud dad, Itay.
Yali is a member of Cheltenham Swimming and Water Polo Club, joining the club after moving to Leckhampton with his family a year ago.
He was born in Israel but has been in this country for three years, spending the first two in Manchester.
“Yali started swimming when he was just a few months old,” continued Itay, who is a project manager. “He’s a very good swimmer, he’s very enthusiastic.”
He plays water polo for Cheltenham and is clearly a bit of a sporting all-rounder because he also enjoys karate and tae-kwon-do.
And he’s also got two younger sisters – Taya, 11, and Goni, 8 – who are making an impression at Cheltenham Swimming and Water Polo Club.
“They’re good swimmers too,” said Itay.
The JCC Maccabi Games, which are for Jewish athletes, are an Olympic-style sporting competition held each summer in North America.Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
