Johnny Harford and Jaymie Haycocks justified their number one seeding as they won the East Gloucestershire Club squash doubles tournament in impressive style.

Harford, who coaches squash at Wycliffe College in Stonehouse, and his partner took the title without dropping a game.

They overcame Chris Fuller and Miles Jenkins in the final after defeating tournament organiser Tom Ford and Mark Broekman in the semi-final.

It is the second time Harford has played the event and the second time he has won. The previous time was with Jonathan Kemp, who had a highest world ranking of 20.

Fuller and Jenkins produced the big upset of the event, beating number two seeds Robert Downer and Dan West 11-8, 11-9.

Ford, 23, may be the driving force behind the tournament but it is an event he has yet to win.

“I’m still trying to work out the morals of whether it’s okay to win my own tournament,” he joked to The Local Answer on the eve of this year’s competition.

Ford and Broekman lost out to the eventual winners 11-10, 11-6 and a laughing Ford added: “Maybe if it had been the best of five sets we could have made a comeback… although they did look very strong.”

It was the fourth time that Ford has organised the tournament and this year’s event, which attracted 28 pairs, was the biggest yet.

“It created a really good atmosphere,” he said. “There was a real diverse group of people playing. We had the young and old, men and women, the highly talented pros and the enthusiastic amateurs, and everything in between.

“In terms of the direction I want to drive this tournament, everything was perfect.

“We had 12 junior county players at the club on Saturday and three of the professionals – Jaymie Haycocks, Chris Fuller and Miles Jenkins – gave up an hour of their time to be with them on court.”

The plate competition was won by Dan Heaton and Bradley Edwards – “A very good doubles pair from Old Patesians,” said Ford. They overcame Mark Toseland – the new chairman of the Gloucestershire Squash Association – and Bradley Jenkins in the final.

“The event was hard work but definitely worth it,” said Ford, who is already looking forward to next year’s event which will take place on Saturday 2nd June and Sunday 3rd June.
