Playing skittles is a real family affair for Lorna Davis
Cheltenham > Sport > Skittles

A lot of the time, a love of a certain sport runs in the family.
This is definitely the case for Lorna Davis.
Her family have been very committed to their chosen sport – skittles. In fact, for Lorna, it’s been for more than half of her life.
“I’ve been playing for 26 years,” said the now 44-year-old.
Even more impressive is the amount of time her mother has been playing for.
“My mother, Sandra Davis, has been playing for 59 years and is now 76,” said Lorna. “My daughter, Lauren, is 21 and has been playing for five years.
“I used to stick with my sister when mum was playing, then when I was old enough started playing myself.
“Lauren did the same – she stuck round me then started playing for the team.”
It’s safe to say that this family are dedicated to skittles.
They are currently playing for the team The Charltonians, based at Hatherley and Reddings cricket club in Cheltenham.
“They are a warm and friendly team who made us feel very welcome when we joined,” said Lorna.
“We always have a good night at skittles, win or lose. There’s always lots of laughs – they’re a great team.”
This family aren’t just playing for fun though – they are good at what they do.
“We’ve all managed to get scores in the 50’s over the years,” said Lorna.
“In 1995-96, as Rolling Pins, we won Division Three and then in 1998-99 won Division One with the same team.
“In 2010-11, again as Rolling Pins, we won the hospital cup.”
It’s not surprising that playing with family also helps to bring out a competitive edge.
“We do have fun seeing who can get the highest score each week – it’s great fighting for top score,” said Lorna.
The Charltonians are not the only team lucky enough to have members of the Davis family playing for them.
“My mum started playing for Sharp and Fisher Ladies, then went on to play for Rolling Pins and then Nise Ladies. She has been with The Charltonians for the last two seasons,” said Lorna.
“I started playing for Rolling Pins in 1992, then went on to play for Nise Ladies before joining The Charltonians.
“Lauren started in 2012, aged 16, for Nise Ladies and then started playing for The Charltonians.”
And none of them plan on giving up any time soon.
“We will all carry on playing as long as we can,” said Lorna.
When something has been part of your life and family history for that long, why would you give it up?Other Images
