Western Tempo runner Dom James is star turn at Cheltenham Half Marathon
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Tuesday, 3rd September 2024, 10:00
Dom James will hope to make it a super six at the 2025 Cheltenham Half Marathon.
The Western Tempo runner made it five wins in a row at this year’s event, finishing some 30 seconds ahead of second-placed Andrew Lawrence from Stratford-upon-Avon Athletic Club.
The Cheltenham-born James raced home in one hour, nine minutes, 18 seconds and was obviously delighted with his run.
“I am very proud,” the 28-year-old said. “I see so many people I know when I run the Cheltenham Half, family and friends, it’s nice to be recognised.
“Running round The Promenade and Montpellier, and then finishing at the racecourse, it’s quite iconic.
“The racecourse was packed, it’s a really good event, it’s got such a good atmosphere.”
Surprisingly, considering the success he’s enjoyed, running 13.1 miles is not James’ favourite distance.
“I prefer the short stuff,” he said. “I’ve done a lot of 1,500 metres and 3,000 metres on the track, I like anything 5K or below. But I enjoy just racing and competing.”
The former Sir Thomas Rich’s School pupil, who lives in Gloucester, is hoping that he hasn’t peaked yet but he has got one eye on the future.
“I’d like to run a marathon, that’s something I haven’t done,” he said. “I’d like to step up in distance, although maybe not next year or the year after.”
More immediately, he’s going to run the Barcelona Half Marathon in February, a race which his dad Chris and brother Simon also plan to run.
That will be a pretty special day, of course, but so will next year’s Cheltenham Half, which will take place on Sunday 21st September.
Next year will be the eighth time that James will run the race and he said: “I think I finished 19th the first year and then second to Ben Price the following year in 2018."
Price, who also runs for Western Tempo, was third in a time of 1.10.26 at the weekend, and James added: “He’s quite inspiring, he’s in his 40s. He gives it a good go, he’s amazing really.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
