This year's Santa Fun Run should be a Christmas cracker
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Thursday, 17th November 2022, 11:00
The festive decorations have been in the shops for a month or two and the work parties have been planned for even longer, but nothing screams Christmas in Gloucester like hundreds of people running around the city’s streets dressed as Santa.
The annual Glos Santa Fun Run, which takes places on the second Saturday in December, has become a big part of the run-up to Christmas in the city and this year’s event is sure to be no exception.
It’s organised by the Rotary Club of Gloucester and, as its name suggests, the emphasis is very much on enjoyment.
“At what other time can you have 300-plus people dressed as Santa running around the streets of Gloucester and not get any funny looks,” laughed Mr Cass, the fun run organiser.
“It’s not a race, it’s all about having fun and raising money for good causes.”
Last year the fun run raised £2,400 and Mr Cass, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Gloucester, is hopeful that they may exceed that figure this time around.
“We had more than 300 runners take part last year,” he said. “There’s a 5K run and also a 1K run for children and people who want to join in but don’t want to run too far. You can run, walk, stroll or jog your way round.”
The fun run starts outside the old Debenhams store in Kings Square on 10th December, with registration at 9.30am or just before, ahead of a 10am start.
Mr Cass has been organising the Santa Fun Run in the city since its inception in 2017.
The first one was held in Gloucester Park and he said: “It’s all for a good cause, we’re trying to bring people into the city, it’s going from strength to strength.”
