It’s fast, it’s flat and it’s got PB potential.

That’s the claim of Cheltenham Harriers runner Andrew Kaighin who is talking about the new EVP 5K series, which was launched last month.

EVP stands for Evesham Velo Park, a new cycle track in Evesham and the venue for the 5K series, and this Sunday sees the second and final race of the series.

“We had about 60 runners for the first race. Ideally we’d like to have about 100, that would be fantastic,” Kaighin said. “We’re giving cash prizes for the first five men and women, it’s something we really want to develop.”

And it would certainly seem to have plenty of potential, with the first race in mid-August being won by England runner Jonathan Escalante-Phillips in 15 minutes, 20 seconds.

He finished two seconds ahead of Western Tempo’s Jack Bancroft, who was also runner-up in Sunday’s Cheltenham Half Marathon.

“It’s a good venue,” continued 32-year-old Kaighin, who has been a member of Cheltenham Harriers for 18 years. “A 5K is five laps of the track, it’s very interesting. We had a couple of top-end runners competing in the first race.”

This is the first time that Kaighin, a 10K and half marathon runner,  has taken on the role of race organiser and he’s enjoyed the experience.

“We made a profit," he said. “I’ve helped out with other races but this is the first time I’ve done it solo. It’s given me a taste for it and I’d like to do a few more.”
