Like a good many others, Steve Kenyon will be running a marathon on Sunday.

But unlike the 40,000 competing in the London Marathon that day, he is not heading for the capital.

The 36-year-old will, instead, be taking part in the Dorney Marathon at Windsor, an event that will see him running around Dorney Lake, which rowing fans will remember as the venue for the London Olympics back in 2012.

Kenyon, of course, won the Apperley Quarter Marathon only last Sunday and he readily admits that running 26.2 miles is not his favourite distance.

“I prefer anything from 10K to half marathon,” he said.

He competed in the London Marathon last year and failed to finish but he has proved he can run the distance because he recorded a very impressive two hours, 42 minutes at the Newport Marathon three years ago.

His time of 36.52 in the Apperley Quarter Marathon, which is run over 6.55 miles, was also impressive and it’s an event he has won four times in the past five years.

He finished third on the other occasion and the Severn Athletic Club member said: “It’s a great event, it’s a challenging course but what I like about the race is that is has such a good community spirit.

“The race organiser Rowan Leeke is a really good guy and he does a really good job, the event raises a lot of money for good causes.

“There’s also a race for the kids. It’s great just to be part of it.”

Kenyon started running 10 years ago and says he started taking it seriously seven years ago. He describes himself as a “longer distance road runner”.

He joined Severn AC earlier this year having previously been a member of Gloucester Athletic Club.
