Why my mum is ‘phenomenal’ – Cirencester AC runner Caroline Cotterell
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Saturday, 2nd December 2017, 09:00
At first glance this looks like a picture of two ladies going for an afternoon stroll.
Look a bit more closely, however, and you’ll see that they are trainers and not heavy walking boots that they’ve got on their feet.
That’s because the two ladies in question, Caroline Cotterell and her mum Sue, are taking part in the Swindon 5K parkrun.
Fair play to them, you might think and you’d be right to think that way of course, but this parkrun is far more noteworthy for the fact that it’s the first one that Sue has ever done at the age of… wait for it, 77!
While 47-year-old Caroline is a member of Cirencester Athletics Club and a pretty regular runner along with her partner and fellow Cirencester AC member Nick Holliday, mum Sue has never been bitten by the running bug… until now.
“It was her birthday last month so it was a bit of a birthday treat,” laughed Caroline, who lives in Oakridge Lynch. “She wanted a challenge and wanted to run a parkrun in under an hour.”
And she certainly managed that, going round in a pretty impressive 53 minutes. But how did she feel immediately after the run and in the days that followed?
“No aches or pains at all,” chuckled Caroline, who like any good daughter went stride for stride with her mum, who lives just outside Wolverhampton.
“I think what she did was phenomenal. Now the challenge is to see if she can go under 50 minutes. We haven’t got a date for her next run yet but she promises she will.
“She’s got to keep running, she can’t wimp out now!”
Caroline, a former member of Stroud Athletics Club before joining Cirencester about a year ago, has been taking part in parkruns for the past five years or so.
So how fast can Caroline complete a parkrun?
“On a good day in 22 and a half minutes,” she chuckled. “I’m not as fast as Nick. He’s a good runner and can go round in under 20 minutes.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
