Super Smiths are champions of Counties 2 Gloucestershire North after their 40-0 win over Brockworth at the Prince of Wales Stadium on Saturday.

They clinched the title with two games to spare after making it 20 wins out of 20 in what has been another standout season.

It is their third title in four years and head coach Ben Parker was in buoyant mood when he spoke to The Local Answer.

“We’re really, really pleased,” he said. “It’s great to have won the league, winning a title doesn’t tend to come around too often.

“I played for 20 years and won just one league title, this is special.”

Parker is a former player with Old Patesians in the days when they rubbed shoulders with the likes of Lydney and Cinderford, and while he is delighted with Smiths’ title success, there is still plenty to play for this season.

“Now we want promotion,” he said.

To get into Counties 1 Western North they’ll need to win the end-of-season play-off against the winners of Counties 2 Gloucestershire South and Parker continued: “We want to get out of this division, we’ve won it twice and still not been promoted.”

They missed out first time around when the league was restructured and the following year they were beaten by Clifton 2nds in the play-off.

Smiths are almost certain to have home advantage in the play-off final against likely opponents Dings Crusaders 2nds, a club whose flagship team play in National League 1 alongside the likes of Richmond and Rosslyn Park.

“They’re going to have a lot of quality but we’ve got to take them on,” said Parker.

“I think we’re ready to step up, we’ve won all our league games so far this season and I think we’ve proved in cup games against Cheltenham that we can compete at a higher level.

“I know the cup is a one-off game but we are now the second-ranked club in Cheltenham, I think we’ll be competitive.”

They were certainly too strong for Brockworth on Saturday when their excellent defence, which has been key to much of their success this season, laid the foundation for another fine win.

They have conceded just 247 points this season – more than 250 fewer than second-placed Cheltenham North – and Parker added: “I don’t think we should gloss over what we’ve achieved this season.

“The North are a big team and have got some good players, and Old Patesians and Old Richians are both good teams.

“To win this league is a big achievement, we’re very proud.”

And while the players have been doing the business on the pitch, Parker is keen to stress the good work that is being done off the pitch as well.

“We’ve got an excellent committee,” he said. “They help to create a great atmosphere, we seem to be getting most things right at the moment.”

Smiths final two league games are at Cheltenham North and Cirencester, while they have drawn Old Patesians at home in both the Papa John’s Cup and the Cheltenham Combination Senior Cup.
