Old Cryptians and Widden Old Boys will compete for the Memorial Cup tomorrow

A big crowd is expected on Saturday for the annual memorial game between Old Cryptians and Widden Old Boys.

The two clubs compete for the Memorial Cup, currently held by Old Cryptians, on what is a special day for all involved.

The match takes place at the Memorial Ground in Tuffley Avenue, Gloucester, which is home to both clubs.

“We could get a crowd of close to 150,” said Tony Kipling, who served in the Army for 26 years and is now 1^st XV team manager at Old Cryptians.

“It’s a very important day for both clubs, there is a lot going on.”

Kipling, who lives in Gloucester and now works in the financial sector, is organising the day which will begin with a service at 10.50am.

The service will take place in the car park by the memorial stone, a stone monument dedicated to rugby players in Gloucester who gave their lives fighting in the two world wars.

That will be followed by an under-11s game which starts at 12.30am, with those players then being part of a guard of honour for the main match which will get under way at 1.30pm.

“The two teams will walk out together,” continued Kipling.

Old Cryptians, who are celebrating their 100^th anniversary, play in Counties 3 Gloucestershire North, one division above Widden, who have won three out of three in Counties 4 Gloucestershire North.

The two teams have already met this season in the second round of the Community Cup Counties 3 & Below Central Plate with Old Cryptians winning 30-24.
