Matson can land a clean sweep on North Gloucestershire Combination Cup finals day at Kingsholm

Matson are hoping for a treble top at Kingsholm on Sunday.
They have teams in all three of the North Gloucestershire Combination’s finals, so a clean sweep is definitely on for a club who have enjoyed great success in the competition over the years.
Their flagship team will take on old foes Old Centralians in the Senior Cup at 5pm, their 2nds will tackle Counties 3 Gloucestershire North champions Gloucester Old Boys in the Junior Cup at 2pm while their 3rds will kick off proceedings in the Glanville Cup against Gordon League 3rds at 11am.
But while there will be plenty of confidence among Matson’s supporters ahead of their triple header, chairman Steve Sadler is certainly not getting carried away.
“We’ve done it before but it’s never easy,” he told The Local Answer. “It depends who turns up on the day.”
Matson play one division above Old Cents in Regional 1 South West and finished 10th in the 12-strong division after winning promotion the previous season.
Meanwhile, Old Cents, who were relegated to Regional 2 Severn at the end of 2022/23, finished second after winning 17 and drawing one of their 22 games.
“They’ve had a good season,” cautioned Sadler.
Gloucester Old Boys have also had a good season, running away with Counties 3 Gloucestershire North.
Matson 2nds finished fifth in the same division and were beaten twice by Gloucester Old Boys in the league campaign just ended.
This is the first season that Gloucester Old Boys’ flagship team have played in the Junior Cup – there was a tweak to competition rules which also allowed Brockworth, Old Cryptians and Widden Old Boys to play in the second tier cup – and they will certainly be looking forward to running out at the home of Gloucester Rugby.
“It’s a big day out,” added Sadler, who has been Matson chairman for 13 years and was president before that. “They’re all big games, we’ve always supported the competition.”
