Majestic Matson clinch Regional 2 Severn title in emphatic style

Regional 2 Severn champions Matson will be defending their North Gloucestershire Combination Senior Cup title in the coming weeks. Picture: Shaun LaffertyAll-conquering Matson made it back-to-back championship successes when they added the Regional 2 Severn title to their ever-growing collection on Saturday.
Their thumping 72-12 home win over Gordano was their 18th of the campaign, and with two games to go they are close to matching last season’s achievement when they won the Western Counties North title with a 100 per cent winning record.
“That would be nice, that would be the icing on the cake,” said player/coach Jack Hayes. “But it’s not the be-all and end-all. The next two games are not going to be easy, we’ve still got to be switched on.”
Their final two league games are both away – to fourth-placed Keynsham on Saturday and seventh-placed Trowbridge a week later – but after scoring 660 points already this season their supporters will be confident that they can go through another campaign unbeaten.
Those supporters were part of the title-winning celebrations on Saturday evening – the party continued into the small hours – but although it’s been another marvellous season for the club there’s still plenty to play for with the end-of-season cup competitions set to take centre stage in a few weeks’ time.
The North Gloucestershire Combination Cup has always been a competition that Matson take very seriously, but this year the club will also be competing in the Papa Johns Community Cup, a competition introduced by the RFU as part of their wide-ranging reorganisation of league rugby last summer.
There is plenty of incentive for clubs playing in the Papa Johns at Matson’s level because the final will take place at Twickenham.
And with the North Gloucestershire Combination Cup finals day in its traditional slot at Kingsholm, it’s easy to see why there is plenty of excitement around Matson, although Hayes is refusing to get carried away.
“I don’t want to look too far ahead, one step at a time,” he said. “There are some good teams in both competitions, Marlborough haven’t dropped a point this season.”
Matson are the North Gloucestershire Combination Senior Cup holders, of course, and Hayes would love to see the club make it a clean sweep this season by also winning the Junior Cup and the Glanville Cup after finishing runners-up in both last time out.
“We want to win it all, all three teams reached their finals last year,” said Hayes. “It would be great if the United and the 3rds can win some silverware.”
The club’s flagship team, meanwhile, will be playing in Regional 1 South West next season which will mean trips to places such as Brixham, Launceston and Exmouth.
“It will mean a lot more travelling,” admitted 31-year-old Hayes. “But the good thing about Matson is that we’ve got a lot of young players in the team, they’ll enjoy the bus trips.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
