High-flying Fairford Women tackle Cinderford Women in a keenly-anticipated NC 3 South West (North) clash tomorrow.

Fairford sit on top of the table with five wins out of five while visiting Cinderford, who are fourth, have won four of their opening six games.

The Forest of Dean club, whose men’s team play in National League Two West, trail the leaders by nine points and Fairford head coach Danny Briggs said: “We are doing well, we are definitely punching above our weight.”

This is Fairford’s third season in the league and while things are going well, Briggs is not getting carried away.

“One game at a time,” he cautioned. “We’re not getting above ourselves. We won two games in our first season and last season we won three.

“Yes, we want to get promoted, but if we don’t it doesn’t matter.”

Briggs is in his third season as head coach and there has certainly been an evolution in the team’s playing style in that time.

“We used to be forwards-dominated, we tried to beat teams physically up front,” he said.

“Now we’ve got a back line that is young and quick so we can mix it up much more.”

Captain and fly-half Charlie Rymer provides much of the spark and Briggs added: “She plays at pace, she’s a brilliant captain too.”

And while Rymer is obviously a key player it’s very much a team effort with Briggs keen to acknowledge the work of coaches Adam Blizzard and Katy Perrett as well as ever-present player and team manager Wendy Button.

“Wendy is the top appearance holder with 47 games,” said Briggs.

Fairford, who get 20 to 30 players to their training sessions, are also through to the last 32 of the Junior Plate and host Bude Ladies on Sunday 1st February.
