Coney Hill captain Joe Twomey is calling on the club’s supporters to play a big role as they look to get to Twickenham for the first time in their 79-year history.

They host Boston in an RFU Community Cup Counties 3 & Below Championship semi-final tomorrow with the prize a place in the final at the home of English rugby on Saturday 23rd May.

“They are our 16th man,” said scrum-half Twomey, who is in his third season as skipper. “We’ll need them on Saturday.”

And they certainly played their part in Coney Hill’s 33-26 quarter-final win at home to Barton-under-Needwood six days ago.

“We must have had 150-200 supporters,” continued Twomey. “Barton brought about 100 people, but the whole of Coney Hill seems to be behind us.”

Twomey, who is 29, has been at the club since the age of nine so he knows just how important tomorrow's game is against Boston.

“This is pretty special, this has got to be the biggest game I will have played in, 100 per cent,” he said.

“We haven’t been at our best in the last few years but now we’re in with a chance to play at Twickenham.”

Coney Hill, who finished eighth in the 12-team Counties 3 Gloucestershire North, opted not to play in the North Gloucestershire Combination’s end-of-season cup competitions and Twomey continued: “We wanted to focus on this competition, we 100 per cent wanted to go for this, we’ve put all our eggs in one basket.”

Coney Hill have twice got to within a game of Twickenham - in the RFU Intermediate Cup in 2015 and 2018 - and Twomey added:  “Hopefully it’s third time lucky this season.”

And Twomey knows what it’s like to walk around Twickenham even though he’s yet to play there.

“We won a tournament when we were kids and we paraded around Twickenham before one of the big end-of-season games,” he said.

“Five of us are still involved now – Jaden Astle, Ryan Kline, Finbar Baker, myself and Clayton Dee.”

Twomey and Baker both scored tries against Barton-under-Needwood – Kai Turner got their other – and the club’s supporters will be hoping for more of the same tomorrow.

Boston, who booked their place in the last four with a 34-22 win at home to Bury six days ago, have been crowned champions of Counties 3 Midlands East (North East) after winning all 18 of their league games.

“Everyone is decent at this stage of the competition,” said Twomey. “We’ve got to be ready for the best version of Boston.”

In the other semi-final, Counties 3 Gloucestershire North champions Hucclecote host Wells.

Hucclecote won 36-31 at Old Georgians six days ago while Wells, who have enjoyed a fine season in Counties 3 Somerset South, won 22-25 at home to Bristol Saracens.

Saturday’s selected other RFU Community Cup semi-final ties – Counties 2 Championship & Below: Smiths v Mansfield.

Counties 2 & Below South Plate: Perranporth v Tewkesbury.

Counties 3 & Below Central Plate: Kings Norton v Cheltenham Saracens.
