Cheltenham Tigers Women celebrate their win over Thurrock Ladies

Cheltenham Tigers Women made it back-to-back wins at Twickenham when they thumped Thurrock Ladies 42-10 in the Championship play-off final.

The victory came 12 months after they beat Leicester Tigers Women 27-17 in the same competition at the home of English rugby and club chairman Steve Ratcliffe couldn’t have been more pleased.

“It was absolutely perfect,” he said. “It couldn’t have gone any better, everything went according to plan, we played very well.”

They certainly did, taking control of the game from the first whistle, so much so that by half-time they were leading 29-0.

“It was a flawless day,” continued Ratcliffe. “We started very well and executed everything perfectly. No game is ever done and dusted but we controlled things, we played some really good rugby.”

Cheltenham have been playing good rugby all season, finishing top of Women’s Championship North 1 after winning 15 of their 16 league games.

Thurrock, meanwhile, won 16 of their 18 league games as they won Women’s Championship South 1 and Ratcliffe added: “Thurrock win South 1 fairly regularly, it was a great all-round performance.”

And it was certainly a great all-round day for scrum-half and skipper Rhi Parker, who took over as captain soon after the start of the season.

“She’s new to the club this year and she’s been outstanding,” said Ratcliffe. “She’s a great organiser and a great player. It’s a great way to end the season."
