Cheltenham College and Sir Thomas Rich’s School meet at Kingsholm on Thursday Cheltenham College and Sir Thomas Rich’s School meet at Kingsholm on Thursday

Two of the best rugby-playing schools in the country will go head-to-head at one of the best rugby grounds in the country this week.

Cheltenham College will take on Sir Thomas Rich’s School at Kingsholm, home of Gloucester Rugby, on Thursday (kick-off 7.30pm).

The match has become an annual showpiece occasion for both schools, with all the proceeds from the fixture going to charity.

“This is the fourth time that we’ve staged this evening fixture between the two schools,” said Cheltenham College director of rugby Olly Morgan, who is also assistant director of sport.

“The first two games were played at Cheltenham Tigers, but last year we played the game at Kingsholm for the first time.”

Cheltenham College have won all three matches so far, although they have all been tight.

“Across the three games we’ve scored 11 more points than them, they’ve all gone into the last 10 minutes with the result still in the balance,” said Morgan, a former Gloucester full-back who also played twice for England.

“I actually think that they are favourites this year, they are two good teams who have had pretty good seasons but they’ve got a lot of Gloucester Academy players.”

Win or lose, it’s a great experience for the players on both sides to play at one of the great grounds in rugby.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity,” said Morgan. “For some of them it will be the only chance they get to play at Kingsholm.

“They’ve all been there to watch Gloucester play with their families, they know all about the excitement, the facilities and the atmosphere.”

A crowd of about 1,000 watched last year’s game, raising in the thousands for charity, and Morgan is hoping for an attendance of some 2,000 this time around.

This year’s charity is Cirencester Housing for Young People, a charity which provides 24-hour supported accommodation for young homeless people between the ages of 16 and 25 in the Cotswold district area.

Tickets for Thursday's match are £5.
