Old Centralians play waiting game as South West One East title charge is put on hold

Old Centralians celebrate winning the North Gloucestershire Combination Senior Cup in May. Picture, Shaun LaffertyOld Centralians should have been playing at Windsor tomorrow.
The South West One East pacesetters were hoping to clinch another bonus-point victory as they look to win the title and with it a return to South West Premier.
The suspension of all games due to the coronavirus pandemic has stopped them in their tracks, of course, but as it stands, they hold a seven-point advantage over second-placed Royal Wootton Bassett with both teams having just four scheduled games left to play.
Old Cents are clearly in the driving season after 12 bonus-point wins on the bounce but they can’t afford any slip-up because their final game of the season is scheduled to be at Wootton Bassett, who are one of only two teams to have beaten them this season.
That defeat was on the opening day of the campaign and head coach Jack Preece said: “We’ve probably been in the best form we’ve been in all season in recent weeks.
“We put more than 70 points on Marlborough and 40-plus points on Chippenham in our two most recent games.
“We’ve been playing a fast style of rugby and we’ve got talented players everywhere.
“We’ve got a big squad, and everyone turns up for training because they want to play.”
Old Cents finished second in South West One East last season losing an end-of-season play-off at Launceston, runners-up in South West One West, for the final place in South West Premier in 2019/20.
“Last season we weren’t quite ready to go up, but you can’t say that this season,” said Preece.
“We’ve only lost two games and the players’ attitudes have been brilliant. It would be great to win the league.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
