Unbeaten Brockworth are hoping to end season in style

Brockworth are closing in on an impressive club record.
They host Cheltenham Civil Service in a Gloucestershire Two North clash on Saturday hoping to make it 13 wins out of 13.
It’s a record that has given them a four-point advantage over closest rivals Bream, who have just three league games to play having played one more than the leaders.
And while winning the title is the main focus for Brockworth, chairman Dave Alden, who is in his first season in the role, admits he’d love to go through the league campaign with a 100 per cent winning record.
“Yes, we would,” he said. “We’ve never done it before. When we won the old Gloucestershire Two back in 1989 the league was in its infancy and we only played 11 or 12 games, one of which we drew.”
Alden, who was a centre in that title-winning side some three decades ago, says the club are desperate to get back up to Gloucestershire One after last season’s relegation.
“We’ve gone from a 12-strong division to one with nine teams,” he said. “That means we’ve only got 16 fixtures and that’s left us with a lot of gaps to fill and that hasn’t been easy.”
And while they’ve won 12 out of 12 with a points differential of close on 450, Alden is certainly taking nothing for granted over the final quarter of the season.
After playing Service, they travel to Minchinhampton, then host Norton before visiting Painswick for their final league game on 4th April.
“We haven’t won anything yet, we’ve still got a job to do and we’re keeping our feet on the ground,” said Alden. “Bream are a good side. We’ve beaten them home and away and our best performance was probably when we beat them 20-3 away in January.
“They tested us, they have some strong forwards.”
That victory was vital – Brockworth also beat them 34-14 in October – and the club are certainly well placed to win the title and with it promotion.
And they are ready to return to the next level even though it has yet to be confirmed.
“We’re training to be a Gloucestershire One club,” added Alden, “we’re training twice a week.”
And the numbers at training have been good, and that, says Alden, is down in large part to coach Jordan Liney.
“He was our assistant last season,” said Alden. “He plays at Hartpury, he’s only 21 but he’s done a brilliant job. He’s got the boys together and they’re fit and they’re enjoying training.”
And that enjoyment is showing through on matchdays with skipper Sam Birch and vice-captain Alex Fisher playing key roles.
“Sam is our no. 8 and he’s a very good captain,” said Alden. “He’s a real inspirational lead-from-the-front captain. Alex is an experienced scrum-half and he’s doing a great job supporting Sam.
“They are keeping the boys motivated to train, they are a very tight-knit group.”Copyright © 2025 The Local Answer Limited.
