One of Cheltenham Rugby Club’s top players in the post-war era has died.

Frank Cherrington, who first played for the club in 1944, died at the age of 95 at his home in Bredon Norton last week.

A prop forward, Cherrington played in an era when Cheltenham played their home games at the Athletic Ground in Albion Street.

Club historian John Woodward described him as an “outstanding player in the 1st XV until 1953”.

He also played for Gloucestershire in 1945 alongside another of Cheltenham’s star names, Tom Price, who played for England in 1949.

“After the war, Cheltenham rebuilt a team that had one of the strongest fixture lists in England and Wales,” said Woodward. “It was not unusual to see England selectors at the Town ground during this period.

“Frank continued to play for the club’s United for about 10 years after he stopped playing for the 1st XV.

“From 1953 he was a member of the club’s general committee and social club committee. He was team secretary from 1972 to 1974.”

After leaving the club Cherrington attended former players’ reunions at the Prince of Wales Stadium and at Newlands and helped the club celebrate their 125th anniversary in 2014.

His funeral will be held at Cheltenham Crematorium on Tuesday 17th December at 11.30am followed by a wake at Newlands.
