Matson and Old Centralians go head-to-head in three cup finals at Kingsholm on Saturday

Two giants of the North Gloucestershire Combination go head-to-head at Kingsholm on Saturday.
The two clubs concerned are Matson and Old Centralians who have made it through to all three of the Combination’s cup finals.
And one thing is for sure, both clubs will be giving absolutely everything as they chase a clean sweep of trophies.
The Glanville Cup for the clubs’ 3rd XVs kicks off proceedings at 11am followed by the Junior Cup at 2pm and the showpiece game – the Senior Cup – at 5pm.
And Andy Payne, the Combination’s treasurer who has done so much to make the cup competitions a success this season, can’t wait for the action to start.
“It should be a cracking day,” he said. “You’ve got two clubs who are not only playing for trophies, they’re playing for bragging rights as well.
“There’s so much at stake and it’s impossible to call any of the finals, anything could happen.”
Indeed it could with both Matson and Old Centralians’ flagship teams enjoying pretty spectacular seasons.
Matson, of course, defied the odds – particularly in that back-from-the-dead semi-final win at Old Colfeians – to reach the final of the RFU Intermediate Cup at Twickenham.
Old Centralians, meanwhile, finished runners-up to runaway South West One East winners Newbury before narrowly losing a play-off final in Launceston, which had they won it, would have seen them back in South West Premier.
They will still be playing at a very decent level in 2019/20, of course, as will Matson who play a level below Cents in Western Counties North.
And quite apart from their remarkable cup exploits Matson have enjoyed a very solid league campaign which saw them win 18 of their 26 games while finishing third.
“It’s a brave man who can pick a winner in any of the three finals,” said Payne. “It really should be a special day, a chance to show off club rugby in Gloucester at its very best at a great venue.
“I’m hoping as many people as possible from all the clubs in Gloucestershire come out and support what is still one of the great days on the rugby calendar.”
The entrance fee for three games at Kingsholm is £7 for adults and £2 for children.Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
