Not so long ago, you only had to turn on your TV to hear the marketing slogan ‘Every little helps’ and that’s certainly a view to which Trevor Edginton subscribes, albeit in a somewhat different context.

You see, Edginton is the co-chairman of Lydney Rugby Club’s mini and youth section and he – along with fellow co-chairman Matt Prior – wants more people to come forward, get stuck in and help take the junior section forward.

It’s certainly a role that Edginton has performed in recent times. Last season he coached the under-13s – his son Isaac played for them – but even though young Isaac has now linked up with Berry Hill, his dad has decided to stay on at Lydney.

Matt Prior, too, is happy to stay on as well even though his son James has moved on. James played for the under-10s last season but has decided that he’d rather play golf than rugby.

And Edginton and Prior are clearly two people who do not want to stand still.

“We’re trying to make the junior section more family-orientated,” explained Edginton. “It’s very male orientated and we want to get more women involved.

“They bring different things to the table. Blokes focus on coaching, that kind of thing, women bring other attributes such as organisational skills.

“But we would like to bring in more volunteers across the board and we want parents to get more involved.

“It’s not all about the kids, it’s about being part of a larger team.

“We’re saying to parents, ‘If you join something, try to join in, literally, join’.

“If you feel uncomfortable coaching, there are lots of other things that need doing.”

Edginton admits that there is a drop in numbers once youngsters reach the ages of 12, 13 and 14.

“There’s not quite the same commitment when kids reach that age,” said Edginton, “other things take over. But we’re trying to encourage more people to play rugby.

“We’re a fantastic community rugby club and, apart from the rugby, we offer people an opportunity to meet other like-minded people.”
