Widden Old Boys are flying high but chairman David Easterbrook urges caution

Widden Old Boys have made a flying start to the new season but chairman David Easterbrook is refusing to get carried away.
The newly promoted team have won four out of four in Gloucester Premier and share top spot with Spartans on 20 points, one point ahead of Cheltenham Saarcens.
Widden finished runners-up behind Berry Hill in Gloucester One last season and ironically the Forest of Dean side are still looking for their first league victory of the campaign.
“I never thought we’d struggle in this division,” Easterbrook told the Local Answer. “To be fair there’s not that much difference between the two divisions although I am surprised by how well we’ve started.”
And Easterbrook is aware that there are tough challenges ahead.
“The next three weeks will tell us a lot,” he said. “On Saturday we play at Cheltenham Saracens in the Senior Vase, then we play them at home the following week in the league before travelling to Spartans.
“After that we’ll have a far better indication of where we are. It’s only the start of the season and we take every game as it comes.”
And as you’d expect, Easterbrook isn’t only concerned about the flagship team because he’s very keen that the club have a strong 2nd XV.
That hasn’t always been the case and Easterbrook said: “We’ve pulled the 2nd team out of the league and are concentrating on playing one or two friendlies a month.
“We want to build up momentum and pick our games, we don’t want to let other clubs down by not being able to field a side.
“The 2nds have played two games this season and though we only had 14 players on both occasions we won both of them so the lads are happy. We’re hoping to take a 2nd team to Saracens on Saturday.
“We play rugby for fun and the aim is to get everyone together and enjoy it.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
