It was an emotional day at Lydney ahead of their first pre-season friendly of the new season.

There was a tribute to long-time club president Derek Pomeroy who died recently after a short illness and will be sorely missed by all at Lydney RFC.

On the field Lydney took on Rochford, from Southend, who have been making rapid progress in the South East Division in recent seasons.

And they proved too strong for a home side who were largely made up of a mixture of youth and squad players as a good number of players were unavailable due to cricket commitments and holidays.

Lydney travel to Old Patesians for a second pre-season friendly on Saturday before hosting Drybrook on Thursday 23rd August (7.45pm).

Meanwhile, Lydney have officially opened their newly refurbished car park which will greatly benefit not only the club but also the wider community who use the clubhouse facilities.

The old car park used to flood easily and Roger Pike, who managed the project, said: “It has taken us three years of applications for funding to finally achieve our target. The days of paddling are finally gone!”
