Craig Greer has worked tirelessly with fellow joint player/coach Andy Macrae this season. Picture, Shaun LaffertyIt’s been a long hard season for Coney Hill but they got their just rewards by winning the Western Counties North title.
So says committee man Simon Baldwin, who is one of a good number of people at the club who work tirelessly off the pitch to ensure that the players have the best chance of success on it.
“Everyone at the club has really pulled together and I’m delighted for the players and the staff,” said Baldwin of the title success.
The club also just missed out on a place at Twickenham when they were beaten in extra time of the RFU Intermediate Cup semi-final by Camberley, but they bounced back to clinch the league the following week, and their 1st and 2nd XVs are both in action on Sunday on North Gloucestershire Combination Cup finals day at Kingsholm.
And although the club still have plenty to play for this season, the planning for the new campaign has already begun.
“I’d like to think that we can stabilise at the higher level, and push on and finish in the middle or top half of the table,” added Baldwin.
And what about the medium term for the club, how far does Baldwin think Coney Hill can go?
“I think realistically that the South West Premier is achievable,” said Baldwin. “But we need to get the foundations right so that if we get there we can sustain it.”
Part of that involves improving the junior set-up at the club.
“We’ve run teams at under-16 and under-18 age groups this season,” said Baldwin, “and we also had a combined under-9/10 side.
“But we definitely want to run more age group teams.”
These are certainly exciting times for Coney Hill.Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
